Pajama Monsters and Weirdos!

Meet the newest Cotton Monster additions!
Pajama Monsters are cute wee little guys clad in striped pj's
with pocket mouths! Also in the shop are a bunch of utterly unique Weirdos,
one-off monsters that I may or may not ever make again,
so better snatch them up while they're in the shop!

Around the house: Recycled Limb Planters

The past few years my mom and I have been tackling her attic, making space and donating things that were stuffed up there long ago, because, let's face it...letting go is hard, and you never know when you might need this or that. A lot of times, for better or worse, I end up with a trunk full of things to take home with me. A while back we uncovered some big zip-lock bags of my old barbies. Most had their hair cut off.  Some were missing heads.  On a mission to liberate their better parts from those weird alien torsos and permanently made-up faces (those that still had them), i dutifully did what seemed obvious and went about dismembering them further, ripping off legs and arms, averting my eyes and cutting them off with big wire cutters when necessary.

I shoved those limbs into the dirt of planters and pots with succulents, cacti, aloe or whatever other spidery plants I already had around, they instantly gained a whole new personality (granted, the legs make for a bit more scandalous display)...
I love them.

Make your own:
1. Find your childhood Barbies or take some from a kid
(and buy that kid a Cotton Monster to replace them)
2. Rip off the legs and arms (or carefully cut off with big wire cutters)
3. Stick 'em in your plants
4. Smile every time you see them

Creek Monster comes to life!

Hey Austin folks! Have you heard of the Waller Creek Conservancy and the Creek Show? If not, stop what you are doing and check out those links to see what is going on in your hood!! (then come back and read the rest of this post!)

I had the pleasure of designing a Creek Monster plush, (pictured above being hugged!) inspired by the Pentagram designed logo, based on an illustration by artist Marc Burckhardt. The monster then went to Austin's White Star Manufacturing sewing house where they patterned, stitched and stuffed a limited edition batch of 50 of these cute, squishy and multi-eyed dudes. Ingrid Spencer, co-creator of the Creek Show, is the awesome lady who brought this plush baby to life, committing a ton of time, energy, and even fabric cutting skills to make this idea a reality!

Don't miss your chance to get your very own Creek Monster this weekend at SXSW Create and support the Waller Creek Conservancy in the process! Details below:

It's Alive!
The Creek Monster, star of the Pentagram-designed Creek Show logo, has been brought to life! Inspired by an illustration by artist Marc Burckhardt, designed by plush artist Jennifer Strunge, and hand sewn by Austin's White Star Manufacturing, each Creek Monster is a limited edition creation celebrating the transformations underway along Waller Creek in downtown Austin.

The Creek Monster will be making its debut at SXSW Create [this weekend]! Visit us at the Long Center City Terrace and get your very own Creek Monster with a donation to the conservancy of $50 or more. Can't make it to SXSW but still want a Creek Monster? Look for Creek Monsters at the Blanton Museum Shop and on our website very soon!

Baltimore Threadquarters

This evening Baltimore Threadquarters in Highlandtown celebrates it's first year anniversary with a reception from 5-9pm! Come out and cozy up, eat some snacks, try out a sampling of new Cascade yarn! AND while you're there check out the window display of some big ol' Cotton Monster creations from my personal collection, as well as pieces in the workshop gallery by artist Robert Hoffman.  If you can't make it to this shindig, be sure to pop over during the month of March to visit the monsters in the window and pick up some yarn, fabric or notions for your next craft project. Bmore Threadquarters also offers lots of great workshops for both beginner and experienced fiber folk! More info can be found on their website!

New in the Shop!

Slowly, but surely, I'm working on refilling the Cotton Monster Shop! I just added a dozen new beasties, and will be continuing to add more items as I make 'em this month. So keep checking back, or feel free to email me if you are looking for something in particular that you don't see.

I got off to a slow start in the sewing studio this new year. I'm blaming it on getting over being sick, taking some time out to get my bookkeeping in order, co-teaching a ten day puppet residency with over 100 fifth graders, a trip to NYC, the icy cold winter and a general lack of sunshine! Phew! But I think I'm finally back on task (with the help of an occasional cup of coffee and back to back episodes of Twin Peaks)...and excited for what 2014 will bring!
