so thankful

I am thankful for so many things in this life that it would be impossible to list them all, but here's a start, just brushing the family & friends for all their unconditional love and support, my little turkey heads for keeping me silly, healthy food that grows from the earth & clean water that flows from my tap,  furry companions that know just when I need a snuggle, my knarly hands that allow me to make the things i love, and all you folks out there that have been supporting me over the years by adopting monsters, writing kind words of encouragement, sending good vibes,  and allowing me to continue to do what i love, day after day! Thank you!

I'll be staying home and sewing through this holiday weekend, so look for a bunch of brand new beasts to be added into the shop just in time for Cyborg Monday!

SO excited for Crafty Bastards tomorrow! Right now I am finishing up some last minute stitches on some brand spankin' new Cotton Monsters, then will spend the rest of the day running around frantically, tagging and packing up the beasts and kitties and all those craft show essentials (tables, chairs, calculator, signage....snacks!) for the trip to DC tomorrow!

The show has moved to Union Market (1309 5th St NE, Washington DC 20002) this year and will be held outside under two giant tents. Forecast is looking good, but we are going to wear three pairs of socks and long underwear just in case! Advance 2-for-1 tickets are still available through today only online.  Cotton Monster will be at booth #10, check out the map here so you're sure not to miss any of your favorites! See you tomorrow DC!

My new Land of Nod Exclusive Families!

Some exciting news to share! I was asked last year to design some new works for Land of Nod's Holiday Collection and they are finally out! I designed & made the prototypes of the Hedgehogs and Raccoons pictured above and Land of Nod produced them.
Pretty gosh darn cute if you ask me!
They are available now online here as well as in LON's brand new pop-up-shop in Soho @136 Prince Street Nov 2nd-Dec 31st. I also got to make a GIANT 4-foot raccoon for the display window! Photos of that to come...

And don't worry, I am still my own one-woman sweatshop, gearing up for craftshows and preparing to re-stock the etsy shop with my one-of-a-kind Cotton Monsters and kitties this holiday season! Check back soon for more details and mark your calendars (if you haven't already) for Crafty Bastards in Washington DC, coming up quickly on November 10th! In Stitches: Fiber show at LBI Foundation

I made these three new beasts and added a few new eyeballs
to my "growth" piece for this new show that opens today!
Please give them a visit if you are in New Jersey!

Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences
120 Long Beach Blvd
Loveladies, New Jersey 08008

 May 10 – June 18, 2012 Reception: Sunday, May 27, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m

"In Stitches displays a contemporary, fresh approach to fiber art, a rapidly
expanding media without the usual boundaries of traditional fine art.
The exhibition features work by internationally-exhibited artists that
combine recycled materials, mixed media, and installation with the traditional
techniques of fiber art; quilting, weaving, embroidery, soft sculpture, and
book making to create a stunning display that will expand your perception
of this growing medium."

Johns Hopkins Children Center Project

Last fall/winter I was commissioned by Nancy Rosen Inc. to make work to be installed within 7 wall niches in the newly built Johns Hopkins Children's Center. The idea was to make a family of creatures that would be reading and interacting with real children's books. The children's books included in each diorama serve as some of the inspiration for other artworks on each floor and throughout the hospital, over 500 works in total!

I got to visit the Children's Center in many stages, the first few times I had to wear a hard hat and flattering neon vest as it was still under construction.  Then just a few weeks ago I got to attend a fancy pants luncheon and tour the finished building with my mom. It was so full of light and bright colors, giant sculptures, paintings, prints and photographs, a huge play room and a library. I just about cried. It hardly felt like a hospital at all.

I know soon the rooms will all be filled with patients and their families, many going through unimaginable hard times...but i hope my stuffed creatures and the amazing collection of children's book inspired work serves as a comfort and an escape for them. I have a feeling they are going to have to clean the glass covering the diorama's quite often...due to lots of little hand and nose prints!

Click HERE to see more images of the works I created, and HERE to see them installed, to give you a sense of their placement within the building!

of the amazing new building and artwork!

back in the studio...finally!

After a bit of a hiatus, today I'm finally back in the Cotton Monster studio today and excited to get back to work!! I spent the last month and a half teaching two youth puppet residencies. One was with an after-school group at Patterson Park Library. We created a puppet version of the west African Tale Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears performed without dialogue as part of a festival of visual theater. And the other was at Southwest Baltimore Charter School, where the students made puppet shows about Lewis and Clark's journey across the US!

I was also basically living at the puppet theater, helping Black Cherry finish up a new marrionette production. I sewed a bunch of tiny puppet clothes and made some pretty cool moving cardboard props (click the link to see a little teaser video!)

I also managed to get strep throat the week of all these performances, which was exhausting to say the least! I took the entire day off on Sunday, for some mental and physical recovery. I slept in, took a nice lazy walk with my buddies and visited the American Visionary Art Museum's "All Things Round" exhibit, which is always an inspiration. Monday I spent the day thrifting for monster skins, running some long overdue errands, and doing three loads of laundry. Now I've got this giant pile of clean & folded sweatshirts and polos begging to be cut up!

Just have to make a quick run to the post to rid myself of my 2011 taxes and ship a big monster commission to Dublin, Ireland (oh how I wish I could mail myself there too!) and then its finally time to get down to business!!

Happy New Year (3 Weeks late!)

Just a quick post to let everyone know I'm aliiiiiivvvve! In case you were wondering!
I've been in quite the time-warp since the holidays. Frantically working on tax stuff (not fun), working at the puppet theater, catching up on custom orders AND working on a couple big top-secret sewing projects (that hopefully i'll be able to share with you soon!)

I don't think I will be able to get more beasties into the Etsy shop before February sadly..But if you want one don't give up hope! Check back next month or email me if you have a specific custom request, and I'll let you know what I can do...

In the mean time, here are pictures of some holiday commissions: custom kitties and monogrammed monsters!
